Notes (slides): Breaking Financial Bondage

It is difficult to listen to the radio, watch television, drive down the highway or even pass our favorite store without someone offering to lend us their money. They promise the good life, they promise freedom, and they promise the ability to “keep up with the Joneses.” There is a raging war in our culture today, and although there are no bullets or guns it has the potential to devastate our lives in ways we can’t imagine. God tells us to “Forget the Joneses” and break the bondage we find ourselves in when we commit to a life of indebtedness. Let’s explore God’s word to find what He says about debt and how to break free from under its tyranny.

Notes: Matthew 6:25-34

It is a marvel to me that Jesus takes the ultimate concern and purpose of life and connects it in such practical ways to everyday life. He deals with this thing called worry, something that we can all relate to, and shows us how to live in his kingdom. He invites us to live free from anxiety. Indeed, to be a follower of Jesus is to be free from this counterproductive and draining waste of mental energy and strength. But in order for this to happen, you must be renewed in your mind. You must think like a Christian. And so Jesus walks us through the mental patterns of how to think like a Christian. You must discipline yourself to get rid of false and deceptive thoughts, and to think truth.

Notes: How To Pray

I think the first thing that jumps out for me upon reading this chapter is just how far most of us as Christians are from living the life that is described here. If we take Jesus at His word we will not find the meaning difficult to apprehend, but we will find that if we try to live this way that we will be a far different kind of person than just about anyone else we have ever met. We begin our study of Matthew 6 with “How to Pray.” In fact, the entire chapter is a bit of a “how to” for the Christian. In terms of prayer, Jesus teaches us how to approach God and what to say as we depend upon him in all things.
