According to Thomas Watson ‘true happiness consists in… forgiveness!’ That’s right – forgiveness. He goes on to identify forgiveness as “an incomprehensible blessing” and as “the foundation for al other mercies”. We instinctively know this to be true as evidenced by the great interest generally afield concerning this topic. I am frequently asked questions about forgiving others and about being forgiven. In today’s passage we discover that forgiveness is absolutely life changing; it is central to our mission as followers of Christ, and it is both controversial and uncontainable.

Notes: Matthew 8:28-34

You have an enemy that is very close to you in this very moment. He is there, but you cannot see him. This great event in the ministry of Jesus reminds us that the battle in the Spirit is real and that much is at stake. More than that, we see that victory over the enemy of our souls is found in Jesus. Matthew invites us to follow Jesus and to walk in spiritual victory.

This is our second lesson on “Going Beyond Your Comfort Zone.” God has not called us to be fearful but has given us a spirit of “power and love and self-control” (2Tim. 1:7). This week we look at what it means to be courageous and the importance of risking failure all to the glory of God. He is stretching us to go beyond what is comfortable in order for us to grow.

Little Faith

Notes: Little Faith

We are surprised to hear Jesus correct the disciples because they are concerned when a storm threatens to swamp their boat. Jesus is asleep and they are panicked. Their faith is “little” Jesus tells them and calls on them to not be afraid. Did they really think that a storm would stop Jesus from fulfilling his mission? He came to do the will of the Father and absolutely nothing could stop him from doing so. Jesus has been given all authority and everything is subject to his power. As his disciples we are to exercise faith that confident that nothing will prevent the mission. Little faith, on the other hand, is faith that is superstitious, insecure, and fearful.
