The Hypocrite

Seldom does a hypocrite see himself as a hypocrite.  Sin deceives.  The hypocrite pretends to fight sin and obey God, but in reality is living a life displeasing to God.  Jesus’ encounters with the hypocrites of his day call and instruct us to a life of authenticity.

Walking on Water

Powerpoint: Walking on Water

We might ask, why is Jesus walking on water?  It seems at first as if it is almost contrary to what we might expect.  It appears that Jesus is doing the supernatural just for the sake of the supernatural, like showing off or like a miracle without meaning.  But there is meaning; there is intention and purpose here on the part of Jesus.  He is indeed preparing the disciples, the apostles in this case, to be godly men and to take their special place in fulfilling the call on their lives.  How appropriate as we celebrate Father’s Day to examine the work of Jesus in preparing his followers for a life of godliness.

They Need Not Go Away

Notes: Matthew 14:13-21
Power Point: They Need Not Go Away

In an amazing account recorded in all four gospels we marvel at the compassion of Jesus as he miraculously feeds thousands.  Jesus doesn’t just do it, but he commands his disciples to do it.  We discover in this unusual interaction that acts of compassion are only possible when we face our own moral bankruptcy, that the consistent doing of such acts in a mercy lifestyle are not optional for Christians, and that God supplies all we need as we yield our limited resources to him.
