Here is a selection of suggested books to get you going.
The Holy Spirit The Anointing : Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow by R. T. KendallJoy Unspeakable by Martyn Lloyd-Jones – Unfortunately out of print. Excellent in building faith and giving perspective on the Holy Spirit and power in the believer’s life. Missions and Ministry In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon – It may be fiction, but it will inspire and help envision one to live a life of serving others.Let the Nations Be Glad ! by John Piper – Best book on Missions available.
Doctrine The Christian Life by Sinclair B. Ferguson – Solid and brief compared to other doctrine overviews. A good introduction.Bible Doctrine by Wayne Grudem – A more comprehensive introduction to Bible doctrine. A good resource to refer to over and over. The Christian Life Desiring God by John Piper – If you can only read one book, read this. It may take some work, depending on your experience, but it will be worth it. If you stay with it, you will be challenged and awakened on every level.Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper – an easier read. Piper wrote this with young adults in mind, but helpful for everyone. Are you fulfilling God’s purpose for your life? Knowing God by J. I. Packer – A classic! Praying: Finding Our Way Through Duty to Delight by J.I. Packer and Carolyn Nystrom - Packer is one of the great statesman of the Church in our day. He has defended the faith and inspired the faithful for the better part of the last century. Carolyn Nystrom is an accomplished author in her own right. Together they have compiled in one volume instruction and encouragement that will strengthen every Christian reader. The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges – Thorough, sound and very practical.
Leadership A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards – Outstanding on the nature of spiritual leadership and issues of authority and submission. Offers insight and healing to the abused.
Devotional For the Love of God, Volumes 1 & 2 by D. A. Carson – Read the Bible through on a regular basis! If you follow Carson’s devotionals (he has taken the reading plan from a Scottish Preacher from the 1800’s, Robert Murray M’Cheyne) you will read the OT once and the NT twice and the Psalms twice in a single year. This proves to be a bit much for most, and so we recommend doing two of the four daily readings each day. This will allow you to finish the NT and Psalms every year and half the OT each year. |
