Inspirational Readings

"The Christian's Devotional Time " by George Müller - Read
In this article Müller tells of his experiences in prayer and the meditation of  God’s Word.

"Revival" by Charles Spurgeon- Read
This article comes from one of Spurgeon’s many sermons. His sermons were always biblical and doctrinally sound, and this one is ample evidence of his skill in convicting, exhorting, and encouraging his hearers to make changes in their lives.

The Christian’s Personal Battle

“I still struggle with sin; am I still a Christian?”  “Is there something really wrong with me – I have been fighting the same temptations for many years?”  Some Christians are under the impression that once they are filled with the Holy Spirit the battle against sin will be reduced to an occasional skirmish that is easily overcome.  This mindset is often reinforced by teaching that states that all you need to do is “release it all to God” or “let go and let God,” and the battle will be over.

But is this effortless, uninterrupted victory a true picture of the Christian life?  No and yes!  The Christian life is a life of victory, but it is far from effortless and often interrupted.

To assist you in understanding the nature of personal warfare, we have put together the two following readings...

"Romans 7:22-25" by Robert Murray M’Cheyne - Read
M'Cheyne was a Scottish preacher in the 1800's who put together an excellent Bible reading plan which we have adapted into our Riverside two-year Bible Reading Plan.

"On John Owen" by J. I. Packer - Read
In this reading Packer is introducing us to one of the great Puritan writers and pastors, John Owen. Owen’s work on sin is well worth reading. There are versions available in modern day English.
